Benshaw recently partnered with Catalyst Connection, a Pittsburgh-based not-for-profit organization, to launch a new apprenticeship program for hourly production employees.
Eight production employees were selected for the inaugural launch of the program … an 18-month endeavor that combines classroom training and structured on the job training. This hybrid training approach provides both general industry knowledge (e.g. best practices for safety, equipment maintenance and use of mechanical tools) and hands-on, on-the-job training from experienced mentors at Benshaw.
The end result for successful participants is a journeyperson certification, followed by certification as a production technician, with all of the technical competencies needed in an advanced manufacturing environment.
Enrollees are all Benshaw employees, earning wages, benefits and seniority while they learn new skills, including:
- Accident/injury protection
- Equipment set-up and operation
- Use of mechanical tools and testing equipment
- Best practices/continuous improvement
- Quality inspection/assurance
- Inventory management
