Carl Stigers Appointed UUSSVI National Chaplain
Benshaw is proud to announce that one of our employees, Carsten (Carl) Stigers, a veteran and active chaplain for the USS Requin, was recently elected as the USSVI National Chaplain.
As the local base chaplain he provides counseling services, makes hospital visits, and performs pastoral duties at various ceremonies such as the invocation and benediction at the “Tolling of the Boats” ceremony every year on Memorial Weekend Sunday–a solemn ceremony announcing each submarine lost, the crew that was lost and the location, after which they strike one toll of the ship’s bell for each boat.
As the National Chaplain, Carl will ensure that for each passing member the local chaplain provides those services, and will attend and perform the chaplain duties at any national event that he may be asked to attend.
Carl has been a pastor since 1982, and has been on the staff of a national ministry in Connecticut where he assisted in overseeing 11 churches. He is also an associate Pastor with a ministry in the Philippines, that allows him to serve at a greater level of influence to a larger group of people. Carl enlisted in the Navy at the end of the Vietnam conflict and served until Desert Storm one–for a total of 18 years. He served on 3 submarines, two missile submarines (nicknamed Boomers), and one special ops fast attack submarine. He also served with Seal Team 2 and 4, and was assigned to the USS Simon Lake where he served as the Protestant Chaplain and the Engineering Department Leading Chief Petty Officer, running the day-to-day operations of a 246-man engineering department as the senior enlisted.
